California Indians
A number of organizations and institutions were founded in the wake of the Alcatraz occupation. Among them were D-Q University (the first and only American Indian university in the state of California), the California Indian Basketweavers Association, and the Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival. More recently, economic development in the form of casino gaming has also impacted life for California Indian communities, bringing much-needed revenue to tribal programs, raising the political visibility of Indian tribes, and providing financial support for a number of cultural programs.
