My mom was born in Durango, Mexico and I was born in Durango, Mexico as well when she was 18. My mom heard that my uncle was doing great in the United States. My Dad adored my mom and I a lot but for some strange reason he abandoned us and my mom hasn’t seen him since.
My mom decided that living in the United States to start a new life would be better and she hoped that I would get a better education there too. My mom and I left on August 4. 1992 on a coyote to the United States and I arrived first to Glendale, California and I stayed in her friend’s house until she arrived. She arrived 2 months later and we were together again. My mom and I moved again to another friend’s house and she a guy named Elmer Robles who was very nice and he took me out to eat and bought me toys. He had come two years before us from Oaxaca, Mexico and he decided to leave to start a new life here in the United States as well. He came to the United States in November 7, 1990 and he came on a friend’s car. Another reason he left was to pursue an adventure in which he did not know anything about, but still liked the idea of it. He told me that he wanted a better life for himself and better opportunities too.
He and my mom started going out and soon began to love each other. After a while my mom was pregnant and my first sister Maria Robles was born on July 23, 1996. Both my mom and my step-dad, which I call dad, were very happy about her and decided to move together and start a family. My parents were really happy at this time to be in California and they loved it very much. They were really proud that they made the right move to come to the United States and enjoyed the State. My parents love California because they have a lot of family in Los Angeles and they haven’t faced any discrimination and any hate from neighbors or other people. They have settled very well and are very friendly with the people here. They have never had problems with the police and with each other. If they had a choice to go back, they would gladly neglect it, that’s how much they have gotten used to this multi-cultural country. For the whole time that they have been living here, they so far liked the experience. My mom hasn’t gone back to Mexico because she just doesn’t want to go and my dad went when his father died and his mother was very sick, he felt that he had to go to say a last good-bye to him.
I haven’t been there myself because I am always busy but I would love to go and see my origins and see some of the family that I haven’t seen at all. So far I have loved the United States too and I wouldn’t move to another country. I am happy that my parents came here because I don’t know what I would be doing now if I were somewhere else. This is the story of our journey to the United States.
