Both of my parents were originally from southern India. They would have continued their lives there, but they both got married in 1976. After getting married, they decided to start a new life in a place where they could find bigger and better opportunities. The United States seemed like a good option because a few of my dad’s sisters already lived in the States. So in the winter of 1976, they made there way to California.

After arriving to the United States, both of my parents ended up renting a low-class trailer in a trailer park. With only a hundred dollars in hand, life was full of struggles. My dad recalled a certain instance when he lost $20. He said that “it was one of the saddest days he can remember”. After collaborating with one of his brother-in-laws, my dad received a barely-running Toyota. My dad then got a job at Loma Linda University Medical Center as a phlebotomist while he attended La Sierra University with my mom for their masters. After graduating the university, both of my parents opened a small shop in Loma Linda. The shop consisted of imports from India. After about 10 months the shop collapsed due to the lack of business. My dad was consistently working and doing odd-jobs.

My mother then made a huge decision and started attending Medical school after her masters. She was pregnant with my brother during the 2nd year of medical school. After many years, my father decided to go to medical school as well. He moved to the Caribbean for four years to get his medical degree. My mother describes this as the most difficult time her in life. She had to take care of a new born child, while my dad was overseas trying to make a life for him and his family.

After my dad moved back to the United States, their lives drastically changed. They went from rags to riches within a matter of a year. Since both of my parents were practicing medicine, they were able to afford a new car and move into a house with a backyard, and it was in a good neighborhood. After about five years of living a comfortable lifestyle, I was brought into the picture.

This was the slow, yet successful story of my parents in California. The Evolution The struggles, struggles and pains, Parents moved to Cali, and played no games. Lived in a trailer, and had 1 bill in their hands, Came to this country with barely a chance. The evolution has started. 10 years later, a child was born. Success, success, success. The mess...gone. Now they lived in a big house with a giant lawn. Rocking horse, rocking horse, Mocking the child. Ran up and down the stairs with a giant smile. Smiling and smelling happiness. Now. How did this life come about. I'm a true Californian, no doubt. Life. From struggles and pains, to laughter and games. I pay all my respects to the parents who made my life this way. The evolution of mind and soul is now complete! I follow the beat of their steps. The cycle will continue...
