I was born and raised in California but I am also a dual citizen of Britain, how can this be? My mother was born in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, England in 1952 and immigrated with her mother and little sister to Canada aboard the HMS Queen Elizabeth in 1957 where they joined my grandfather who had gone ahead to find new work. At this time England had been experiencing a time of austerity in the wake of the Second World War and my grandfather had the foresight and sense of adventure to look abroad for better opportunities. My grandmother was very reluctant to leave her family to move abroad but decided to go nonetheless. My mother and her family later moved from Ontario, Canada to California in 1965, traveling cross-country in the family car. She moved several times within southern California before eventually meeting my father (originally from Indiana, but raised in southern California) and settling in Riverside, CA where my brother, sister and I have lived our whole lives in the same house (so far).
